Skinny:

San Jose State won a combined three games in 2009 and 2010 â€" the former under ex-coach Dick Tomey and the latter in the first year of current head man Mike MacIntyre, who did a great job of improving the Spartans to 5-7 in 2011. However, SJSU will lose QB Matt Faulkner and RB Brandon Rutley from that improved team. In fact, the Spartans will return just seven starters and only one holdover on defense.

Still, MacIntyre has the San Jose State dreaming of relevancy; the Spartans won a bowl game in 2006 â€" their first since 1990 in their only appearance since then â€" and have, generally, been a gridiron doormat. That’s why we can imagine “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & The Papas playing in the background as MacIntyre works tirelessly at a program that still feels far away from sunshine.
